SARAH HORNER FISH, Executive Director: Sarah is responsible for all of our camp programs and over sees the staff, training, and operations of all of camp. Sarah has been a camper, junior counselor, Pre-Camp Counselor, Summer Day Camp counselor, Assistant Day Camp Director, and Pre Camp Director during her 35 plus years at TSC! Sarah works year round at camp doing many different jobs, including the hiring, enrolling and training of our staff. Sarah is also very active with the American Camp Association and has recently completed a term on the National Board for ACA and recently completed a 5 year term as President of WAIC (The Western Association of Independent Camps).
GUY FISH, Director of Strategic Initiatives: Guy spent 20 years of his career working in the museum field in upper management. His work with the Getty Center, the Getty Villa, the Huntington Library, among others, has given him a diverse range of experience with project, system and staff management. He worked at TSC in his youth and rejoined the family business to work alongside his wife Sarah, where he focuses on strategic and long range plans for CIC and TSC (90 years and counting!). Guy is also an accomplished Plein Air painter, working in and around Southern California.
KATHY GARCIA, Outpost Director: Kathy has been at TSC for over 25 years and 15 plus of them as a Director. A graduate of the University of La Verne with a degree in Liberal Studies, Kathy has worked in our Day Camp Program as a counselor, Assistant Director (Director of Fun!) and Aquatics Director. Since 2005, Kathy has been at the helm of our middle school program, Outpost. Kathy works year-round as our Summer Camp Coordinator, and oversees our High Ropes/Initiatives Program.
ERIC IKARI, SDC Director: Eric is a familiar face to many campers at TSC because of all his years and jobs (and ability to sing the Moose song) at camp! Eric has spent over 15 years working at TSC and is now the Director of SDC! He spent 5 summers at TSC Too as a Senior Counselor, 4 summers at SDC as one of our Assistant Directors, and the past 8 years as the director of TOO!. Eric has worked 10 plus years at our After School Programs and is currently the After School Camp Director. Eric is involved with our local section of the American Camp Association as a Standards Visitor as well as helping to plan local conferences and programs.
KATE BAXTER, Staffing Specialist and Pre-Camp Director. Kate started working full time at TSC at the start of 2017. Kate received a MA in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2015, and, in addition to being with us full time, continues to work toward completing her hours toward her MFT and Art Therapy License! Kate has worked for TSC most recently as the Director of PreCamp, and prior to that she worked as a Senior Counselor in our Summer Day Camp program.
CANDACE TOOGOOD, After School Camp Coordinator and TSC TOO Assistant Director. Candace started working full time at TSC at the start of 2017, after graduating from La Verne University with a BS in Environmental Biology and working with the Sierra Nevada Americorps Partnership. Candace helps all of our year-round programs function smoothly by providing administrative support. She has been with TSC for over 12 years, volunteering as a Junior Counselor and working as both an Assistant Counselor and as a Senior Counselor most often at TSC TOO!
Rick Benfield, Joining us in 2017 as Chief Financial Officer, Rick is a successful executive and versatile leader with extensive experience leading large and small organizations across multiple industries. As an experienced entrepreneur, Rick owned his own day camp and has been a Horner family friend for over two decades. Most recently he spent 8 years as CFO of a non-profit independent school with 500 students. In addition to supervising finance and accounting for Tom Sawyer Camps & Catalina Island Camps, he is responsible for helping us enhance operational efficiency, achieve sustainable growth, and implement our strategic vision. Rick has served as President of the American Camp Association (“ACA”) SoCal/Hawaii, Chair of CA Collaboration for Youth, member of the ACA National Audit & Finance Committee, and Legislative Chair for the Western Association of Independent Camps.
LAURA KEEN, Office Relations Manager Extraordinaire: Laura came to TSC via her husband who worked here in the 80’s, and then through her two sons who were campers for many years. Laura is the first voice you usually hear when you call our office, and who is always happy and eager to talk to all of our camp families and friends. Laura has a background in interior decorating and sales, but says her all time favorite job is working at TSC (although decorating royal families’ palaces in Paris is a close second).
Evan McDaniel, Having been a part of Tom Sawyer Camp since he was 6 years old, it is truly Evan’s home away from home! Working most recently as Assistant Director of our Equestrian program, Evan went back to school to earn a welding certificate. He is thrilled at the opportunity to combine two of his passions; automotive maintenance and camp safety. Prior to being an Assistant Director at Horses, Evan ran our Odyssey After School Camp site for 7 years after working at all other After School Camp sites. Evan was a Senior Counselor at Horses, an Assistant Counselor and Junior Counselor in Daycamp, and camper from Boys 1 through Outpost. Over 10 years ago, Evan also met his wife at camp, and looks forward to sending his daughter to camp and experiencing the role of camp parent!
WALT MYERS, Director of Operations, Stable Manager: Walt is the onsite caretaker of Tom Sawyer Camp’s equestrian facility located in the Pasadena Equestrian Center in Hahamongna Watershed Park. Walt and his staff are in charge of cleaning, maintaining and upgrading the property, stalls and arenas to ensure the safety and proper care of our horses.
Becky Morrow, Becky got her start at Catalina Island Camps as the store manager in 2005. For 13 years she lived and worked on Catalina Island as a program director for summer camp and the outdoor education program CELP. Becky has a degree in Communication from Loyola University Chicago and is currently pursing a SHRM-CP. She is excited to join the TSC Business office as the Human Resources Manager!
Louise Carnevale has worked as a bookkeeper for Tom Sawyer Camps since 2009, and enjoys her work helping make a difference at camp. Prior to her job at TSC, she spent 25 years as a hair stylist, eventually owning her own business. Both Louise’s sons spent many summers working at TSC; her daughter started at TSC as a camper and then spent many summers at camp as a lifeguard and swim counselor.
DR. KATIE ENNEY, Program Director: After working full time for many years at TSC (plus 22 years as a camper, Junior Counselor, Assistant Counselor, Senior Counselor and Assistant Director at Pre Camp), Katie now works part time for camp helping with enrollment, transportation and more (she knows every street in the San Gabriel Valley)! Katie is the Assistant Director of BLAST and holds her PsyD.
MIKE HORNER is Chairman and one of the owners of TSC. He and his late wife Sally bought the camp in 1973. Sally was Executive Director and VP of TSC until she retired in 2005, and was the person who made TSC the success it is today. Mike still handles most of the financial aspects of the camp. Sally and Mike both got TSC highly involved with the American Camp Association (ACA). Sally served in a number of positions with the ACA, including two terms as President of the Southern California Section, 8 years as a board member of the National Standards Board, and as a board member of the ACA Foundation, a board which Mike currently serves on. Sally and Mike have received numerous awards for their work in camping. Sally passed away in January of 2017.
