Each year, TSC provides scholarships for campers who cannot afford the entire camp fee and whose presence at camp will broaden the composition of the camp community. This fund is made possible through generous donations from our camp families as well as funds from TSC.  In honor of our 90th, we’d love to grow this fund to make camp available to more children who otherwise would never attend camp.

Because this fund is run by the American Camp Association, a nation-wide non-profit, your donations are tax deductible. To give a child in need the gift of camp, make your check payable to the American Camp Association/Tom Sawyer Camp.  Mail your check to TSC and we will forward your check to ACA who will in turn send you an acknowledgement of your donation.

The TSC story began in 1926, at an all-boys resident camp at Laguna Beach’s Blackbird Canyon; with Bill and Al Schleicher, as a place for the city boys to experience the great outdoors- and get dirty! In 1938, the Schleichers moved the camp to Horseshoe Lake in Northern California, where the rustic terrain of Shasta County offered the ideal setting for campers to continue exploring the natural outdoors.

8 years later, in 1944, Tom Sawyer Camps relocated again, to Pasadena’s Arroyo, where it still remains today operating as a day camp.  After moving to La Canada, the Horner’s befriended the Schliechers when their son Tom enrolled as a camper at Tom Sawyer Camps. Little Tom Terrific thrived at Tom Sawyer and soon it became an invaluable part of his summer. In 1973, the Schleicher’s were looking to sell Tom Sawyer, and couldn’t find any buyers.  It looked like Tom Sawyer was set to close for good…

That’s when Mike Horner jumped in and bought TSC.  Not having Tom Sawyer around wasn’t an option. Mike’s wife Sally came in to manage the office, and soon became Executive Director. She held the position for the next 30 years, succeeded by her daughter, Sarah Horner Fish.  Sally did a great deal to professionalize the camp, setting standards with the American Camping Association, and forming valuable relationships with the Western Association of Independent Camps.  Sarah is now the Executive Director of TSC,carrying forth the family tradition of setting the highest standard for day camps.

After 90 years in the camp business, TSC has provided countless opportunities for children to build friendships, self-reliance, leadership and so many other important qualities – while still having some good old fashion fun in the great outdoors. Tom Sawyer Camps certainly has a rich history of “providing fun filled days where children feel happy and safe!”
